Installation of aluminium door with steel beam above

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Hi We have an aluminium door to install directly below a steel lintel. I've read different things online but some say the door frame cannot be installed directly into the steel/touching the steel. Is this true? and if so how would the door be secured at the top? cheers

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi use fixing cleats & fix them to the internal lintel. Your bifold manufacturer should be able to supply these at a few pounds each.

Aluminium and steel have a chemical reaction if they are touching, if its a single door that’s being installed then no fixing of head is required if it’s a bifold then using fixing straps is not sufficient because the head can bow, fix directly into the steel but use plastic packers to keep the aluminium away from the steel. Alternatively use a tradesman to do the job who will know this!!

Hi there you can fix in to the steel no problem what the are say is that you don’t want your Ali bi fold door touching the steel as you will get bad codensation as the there will be no thermal break as long as there is a gap between your doors and the steel your fine to fix a screw through if it is measure tight and the Ali touches the steel you will have a problem but most people measuring give 10 mm anyway hope this helps
