Water leaking from flue

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

We have just had heavy rain after the long frost and there is water leaking in from the flue joint just above the log burner. The inside of the burner is dry. Where can the water be coming from? Could it be coming from a leaking chimney ? UPDATE: - We have a 'coolie hat' style cowl fitted, however we are in the process of changing to a different style to see if that may prevent rain blowing in.

You may require chimney repointing or replacing the lead work

It could be a few things, if your stove has a flue liner, the water could be running down the inside or out side of the flue, if it's running down the outside of the flue it means rain water is coming in via the cement flunch, this will just need re flinching, this is the cement holding the pot in place. If water is coming in from inside the flue, the cowl might be letting by because it loose or damaged.

It sounds like the liner upside down it made so rain water. Condensation running down should run into the liner and into the stove. If you can feel inside the liner you can tell. But might need cctv to tell and you need to know wot your feeling or looking at. If upsides down all water will run out of liner. Onto the joints and onto the stove. Mark innes. Innes construction.

AS the poster has put the chimney may require re pointing or new flashing but more info is needed. What is on the top of the chimney as in a chimney cowl, is it wide enough to stop water ingress from high wind and rain as we have had recently, is the chimney flue insulated around the liner, ? Is the water clean looking or sooty?. as i have said more info is needed to exactly what the set up is .
