Unsure if lamp is safe because it is not unearthed
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM
Sorry to ask this question but would be grateful for some advice! I bought this lamp as a Christmas present but have since read reviews that it is unsafe because it is not earthed. It has a wooden base but the lamp stand is metal. There is an on/off switch on the cable. Thanks so much in advance. https://amzn.eu/d/8snaUNK Thank you for your help Ian and Hire-a-Handyman, It’s CE marked but not with two squares. It says Q.C Passed 0.1?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if its CE marked , and has the double insulated 2 squares identification on the rating , CE label , it is safe to use.
If however , you can not prove it is double insulated and a class1 item , the metal base as any metal accessories ,should be connected to earth .

It’s difficult to give you exact advice without inspection, if the lamp holder is class 2 (double insulated) it may not require an earth connection. If it’s class 1 it should be earthed but this connection may be inside the lamp holder and so not easy to tell if that’s the case from the pictures online. The pictures online show a plug with an earth pin but either an internal inspection will confirm the presence of a CPC (Earth wire) or PAT test if the plug is tamper proof. There’s no way to tell if the reviews are accurate as any unqualified person could have said whatever. No way to tell if it’s correctly assembled without an inspection or PAT test. I’d recommend showing it to an electrician.

Hi there, as the lamp has metal areas that you are able to touch it really should be earthed. However if there is no way for a broken live wire to touch the metal then should be ok although really should have installed an earth just for added safety.
