18mm chipwood boards over 2 by 6 joists

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

Hi, I am planning to board my attic for additional storage, would it be ok to use 18mm chipboard over 2 by 6 joists? From my measurements the joists are approx 3.2m long and spaced at 600mm. The boarded area will be approx 30sqm. I will also use 175mm loft legs to create the required space underneath for insulation. Will I be ok with the additional weight (approx 300kg) for all the boards and little extra for storage?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The standard required mm on all new build houses is 22mm but 18mm will be fine as long as there isn’t a lot of weight

personally i would use 22mm caber board with joists spread at 600mm centres, you may get a bit of flex with 18mm, especially if you're storing heavy boxs etc.

If you use 18mm flooring your joists should be at 400 mm centres.
