New 13amp oven wired into 16amp 'red switch' - easy job?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

Hi all. We've just moved home and the oven in the new place is a bit manky so want to get this replaced. I've had a look around and it seems that our current oven is hard wired in to a 'red switch' (as refered to by AO). I've been looking at ovens for a few hours, sound one I liked and it says it is supplied with a 13amp plug so it would plug straight in to a socket if we had one. My question is would the new 13amp plug be able to be removed and wired in to the original socket of the old (manky) oven? Thanks and apologies for the likely silly question! Beck

Yes. You can cut the plug off and hard wire it into a 'cooker outlet'. I wouldn't recommend wiring it directly to the big red switch itself. If it's wired that way then it suggests the wiring has been played about with in your kitchen. Time to call an electrician! However if the Red switch supplies a cooker outlet or cooker connection unit as they are also called which is directly behind the oven where it should be then you will be fine to connect directly to this. A better way to do it is to change the cooker outlet to a 3pin socket, then you can plug the oven directly into this and you won't invalidate your warranty. Maybe have someone do this for you and they can check the condition of the wiring as well while they are there. Just make sure they are registered with a competent persons scheme like NAPIT so they know what they are talking about.

Change cooker outlet to a single 13A socket.

Reading previous answer is worrying. No you can’t cut plug off. That would be dangerous and possibly lead to a fire. The plug has a fuse in it for a reason. Yes you could change cooker outlet to a single socket but this may be difficult due to the size of cable. Get electrician to sort this for you own safet
