Capped pipe in utility room was gushing hot water

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

We had a problem this week with hot water gushing from a vertical capped-off copper pipe in our utility room, with a valve on the end of it. The valve had just blown off. I caught it after a few minutes and turned the water off so nothing much was damaged. This was just after we'd had our boiler condensate pipe replaced, but I don't know if these things are connected. It's now been sealed again. There are four pipes side by side, three of them capped and one which serves the washing machine. Surely no water should be going into a capped pipe? Where would it have come from? (I'd post a photo but I don't know if I can here.) Immediately prior to this the radiators were cold and so clearly no hot water was going the usual way round the system.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the pipe is capped then it may well be a live pipe. You may need to get a soldered cap (if not already) this will prevent any further loss of water. I would suggest getting someone to check it if you’re concerned.

Sounds like it was an old hot feed your washing machine. Needs capping of securely As most new washing machines only require a cold feed.
