Bay window rooms are so much colder than the rest of the house - what could be causing it?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM
I like in a 1930’s house with bay windows on the ground and 1st floor. The 2 rooms at the front with the bay windows are considerably colder than the rest of the house and don’t seem to heat up with the heating on. As it’s also my young child’s too, I’m really concerned about why it’s so cold. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi
It could be due to the lack of insulation in the roof of each bay, which may be contributing to the heat loss. Also the cavity (if there is one) of each bay may also be lacking insulation.
This would be my guess, without physically seeing it.
Hope this helps.

Perhaps try to locate where the draft is coming from then insulate and draft proof the 2 rooms. You will know straight away if it’s worked. If not further insulation and draft proofing will need to be done

Generally speaking bay windows will be less insulated than other external walls, and of course are more exposed than other walls.
The only permanent solution is to improve/increase the "wall" insulation and install double glazed windows (if not present).
Hope this helps.
