Boiler not firing in just the morning

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.50 PM

I would be grateful for any possible advice. Short of money and baffled by recent issues with the boiler. The heating is set to come on in the morning and evening. It appears to come on as required in the evening. In the morning, the timer signals that the boiler should be firing but it doesn't. Additionally if I manually put the heating to "on" it fires immediately. I have bled my radiators and fiddled with various settings to no avail. I'm not sure what the manual or automatic setting does that is paired with the thermostat, it seems to work on both? I have no idea what each does. The boiler is recently serviced with no issues. It's a potterton suprima HE, there's been a few occasions when it's been reluctant to work on the timer after being off a long time. The display on the timer goes faint when you press some of the buttons. Does this point to a faulty timer?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I am not a gas engineer, but do have plumbing experience. I am assuming you mean you have a timer setting on for it to come on in the morning, then again in the evening? If so, and its coming on in the evening only, is it possible the timer settings are not set right in some way, am/pm etc? Also, what type of timer is it? wired or wireless. If it's a wired controller and the display is going faint or going out, there are possible wiring issues. Problems like that which involve your boiler and possibly electrics are best left to people experienced in that field. Those type of issues can turn into wild goose chases when you try to work it out for yourself. My advice would be to find a reputable gas engineer to look at it for you. you will get the answer quicker and can go from there.

If it's a new-ish boiler with a new-ish programmable thermostat, it's possible that it's Wiring up to run on 'open therm' or a 'weather compensator'. What either of these do is decide if your house really is cold enough to require the heating on, i.e., house is only 1.5 degrees below your target temperature, and the software says 'no no Mr Jones, you don't need your heating on......I know best'. They save you about £20 over the life of the boiler but cost you more should you have not be wise enough to ask hear. It could also be a partially blocked condensate trap, (I've seen it where the condensate pipe it piped into a slow draining bath) and it caused problems in the morning. Try setting your target temp 2 or 3 degrees higher.
