By 'Martingale' I assume you are referring to a plugtop type tester, named after the original manufacturer 'martindale', although I am guessing, IF this is the case and a plugtop tester states no earth on a socket it is completely unsafe (there are circumstantial variations as to how unsafe it is depending on what's plugged in), however a UK 3 pin socket MUST have an earth for it to meet safety requirements, so I'll offer up a strong no, it's not safe at all.

If there was a faulty appliance connected to those sockets that have no earth connection then the appliance will have no path for fault current to pass through which can result in an electrical shock when touching the appliance conductive parts if they become live and can result in serious injury or death so yes not safe at all to plug anything to those sockets if they don't have any earth connection as indicated by your martindale tester. Better to have the sockets checked out for earth continuity throughout the property

Hi Stephen,
as stated above this is unsafe for continued use. Not having your earth connected takes away your fault path in the cause of an electrical fault. This would be noted as a C2 in an EICR.
Please get this seen to by a registered electrician ASAP.
Thanks
Rhys

No, it is not safe, but something that might be worth considering is to try the rest of the sockets in your house, if you have more than one socket circuit, and you get the same result from all of them, your whole house may not have an earth connection, either way, an electrician needs to test and find the reason, it may also be worth trying your tester at a neighbours to check that your tester isn't faulty? Unlikely but with these things you get a better picture by ruling out things

No not in so many words however worth getting it checked out how old is the installation ? Also worth checking more sockets hopefully they show up differently with an earth present
The metal conduit could of been the original earth if it's wired in singles and somewhere along the line your testing a spur and it wasn't earthed properly
Or simply the earth wires not connected properly could of come lose over time but that tells me what else could be wrong with the installation
