Automated gates for driveway
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
Our bricklayer is about to start building the wall but we haven’t ordered the gates yet. Is there a standard size for automated gates that we should be aware of so that we can build the wall to those dimensions?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello. Hope this helps.
There is no such thing as a ‘standard gate size’ or width.
Instead, gates are built to fit your driveway whatever its dimensions and that means gates are manufactured in a wide range of heights and lengths.
Driveways and other entrances vary greatly from property to property, but there are a few points worth remembering.
Most will be wide enough to allow a car through without too much risk of damage.
Even then, experience tells us maneuvering a vehicle is harder in more confined spaces.

Don't build the piers until the gates are sorted. You may need electrics and/or sensor cables within the brickwork. Get the gate guys involved asap

Definitely consult the gate manufacturer before building, as already stated there may need to be electric cables run through the pier and every gated entrance I’ve built has had steel posts inside the pier with an arm that extends through the brickwork to take the weight of the gate.
As for size there is no standard size but size could determine how much support the gate will require
