Roofer asking for over 50% deposit to cover materials
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
I recently had a roofer recommended by MyBuilder and after carrying out a quote they have asked for £1,250 to cover the cost of materials upfront leaving me to pay a remaining £1000 to cover labour on completion. Can you please tell me if this is a normal practice and am I covered by my builder if I pay the deposit and the trades person doesn't start the job or if the job is completed to a poor standard?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

this is quite usual, best paid into the contractors bank account, so you know where it has gone, as far as i know my builder will not guarantee any contractors attendance or the standard of their work, you will have to carry out your own due diligence regarding the contractor, ie check his references , ask to see work he has completed in your area.

To pay for materials up front is understandable but not until the materials arrive on your property. I do not ask my customers for anything until completion unless materials exceed over £2000. If your happy to pay up front make sure you have it in writing and a reciept. Never cash as you can’t prove you have paid them for materials and if they have the reciept for them legally you can’t do anything. All the best

you are only covered if you take out the my builder insurance policy, it is really your choice if you have checked there references and done your due diligence that's all you can do,
you really only have three choices,
pay the contractor you have selected,
take out extra insurance,
get someone else.
good luck Alex

I would never ask for a deposit. If a contractor hasn't got the cash flow or means to buy the materials then I would be very suspicious
Never pay a deposit
