Smoke coming out my chimney and going down my neighbours chimney.

Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.48 PM

My chimney is lined with a 6 inch stainless steel liner.Higher pot than my neighbours by about 30 inches. After lighting my woodburner which is Defra approved (Herald Allure 7)my neighbour informed me that smoke filled his dining room that shares the same stack. I tried to resolve the issue by putting an even taller pot on but still no joy. I knocked a hole in my chimney breast above the register plate to check if smoke was coming down my chimney and seeping through the brickwork by holding a torch inside my chimney to see if I could see any signs of smoke....it was clear and no smell of smoke. This means the neighbours chimney is drawing my smoke down his. I suspect his chimney needs to be vented to prevent sucking in the smoke. The liner was fitted last year by a professional as was my other woodburner with liner in my living room that has no issues. Any suggestions to resolve this issue would be appreciated.

It does sound like a flue or a down draft issue but could also be seeping, your neighbour may also have an issue with his flue, I would get a HETAS approved contractor to check it all over, do not try do anything yourself due to health and safety.

I have been doing chimney sweeping for many years and have seen this before. It could be in my opinion one of two options, if your neighbours chimney is siphoning the smoke from your pot or The bridges also known as chimney feathers are damaged, these are the walls inside the chimney stack that divide The individual flus internally, if they are damaged then the smoke can pass through and go straight into the room with a fireplace, I can provide a diagram if needs be.

I'm not a chimney expert but I would isolate and do not use until you have had it checked out by an expert

I would say brick withes are missing between the flues and your flex liner has not been taken to the top of the chimney pot.
