Paint flaking on floor do I need to prime before re-painting with tractor paint?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.32 PM

We painted an indoor concrete floor with a dulux weathershield paint and it's all flaking off and comes off when you mop. We need to repaint it and make it watertight and cleanable with clinical level products. Would you recommend priming before using an industrial tractor enamel paint? Thank you!

Yes I would use a primer. It would be advisable to ask for info at store of purchase.

You’ll have to remove as much of the flaking paint as possible. Your methods will differ depending how bad it is. Scraper/wire brush. Paint stripper may also be an option. Then a concrete sealer needs to be used. Once thats dry you should be able to paint it. Not sure you need something like tractor paint of all things inside. A regular floor paint like Johnstones Floortred should suffice. I’ve never had a problem with this process. Done many a garage floor like this and never had an issue.

Before recommending a coating for a new concrete floor, it is important to know if curing membranes or concrete hardeners were used by the floor finisher. Paint does not stick well to these materials and failures usually result when they are painted over. If water beads on the surface of the floor, or acid* etching doesn't seem to work, it is likely that a membrane or hardener was used. Membranes can be removed with paint remover, but, hardeners must be mechanically removed

Decorating is something like 97 percent preparation, when I was taught how to paint and decorate 25 years ago I remember a saying that every painter and decorator should adhere to… (Fail to prepare then prepare to fail) Most paints on the market today will adhere to concrete, you just need to prep the floor, sand the floor with an electrical sander,so it’s clean, dust free, dry, not too cold, the apply your paint.the problem you have is your paint applied will be amalgamating with all the above giving it no chance to do its job. It’s not how it looks but how it’s done says Northern Decorating Services
