Cracks appearing after re-skimming of living room ceiling

Your must must be base in ceiling boards to appear crack that quick. Possibletys 1* it was large gap did filled in well. 2* boarding wasn't layout properly and didn't attached how needs to me. 3 * When your neighbours walks o top floor cause vibration because of forst two reason. You have to open up cracks with sharp boarding knife, than you apply filler properly , top on filler apply mesh smooth with filler ,centre the cracks and100mm wide each side smooth and wait until properly dry sand and paint that's shout be fine. Cracks can appear for a few reasons . Boards not staggered properly and too many straight joints. Not enough screws used and not firmly fixed especially if it was an overboard of existing ceiling . Vibration from above can also crack the ceiling . I would suggest to take out with a Stanley knife to form a V then fill with a superior filler and leave it slightly proud . Then rub down with a P120 grade sandpaper . Other than that you could scrim the joints , PVA the ceiling and Reskim it again but obviously last case scenario because of what’s involved .

Depends on original state of ceiling and plasterboard! Movement from above could have had an effect but not if crack appeared after 2 months and bigger than hairline! Best way is to find a good decorator to refill crack. You wouldn’t want to re plaster due to weight which could likely crack again so a reboard would be needed

Plaster isn't structural, it's only cosmetic. Sounds like the cracks were already there and would come through a new layer of skimming. Movement in the joists can cause cracking, especially if its a double joist and the boards were jointed onto it. Also old lathe and plaster ceilings can deteriorate and are often covered in cracks. I'd suggest overboarding it, making sure the plasterboard joints don't land on a crack. Take more care in applying scrim tape and maybe add fibres to the first skim coat. Screwing new board up should help tighten any movement in the ceiling as well, and provide a bit more sound/heat insulation.
