Condensation in loft

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.44 PM

I have loads of condensation in my loft in winter. Seems to only occur when the heating is on. It dries out in the summer. Have been advised to pull insulation away from the edges to improve air circulation. This has not worked. I always try to dry washing outside and ventilate the bathroom/kitchen through the use of fans, windows and trickle vents where necessary. My house was built in 2003. I've noticed my kitchen has no skirting boards behind the kitchen units, so there is a gap between the interior plaster board and exterior wall. I wonder if heat from the boiler pipes, cooker etc is going up the gap between the walls and infiltrating the loft? I believe the cavity wall insulation is with blocks of polystyrene only.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You have a sweaty roof which is where hot air rises, hits the cold roof and turns into condensation. The way to fix this is by installing vented tiles, dry ridge system, vented soffet & a breathable membrane. This will allow plenty of air flow into your loft space, evaporating any moisture. Sometimes you can solve the problem with just vented tiles, but other times you will need the dry ridge and vented soffets aswell to maximise air flow and evaporate the moisture.

You should ask for advice from a damp/ condensation company. I believe that you would benefit from a PIV system. (Positive input ventilation).
