Bricklaying & Repointing

Will bricklayers do the job of removing old coping stones?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

Hello, we have a leak in the corner and along ceiling - wall joints in our dining room. It's below a recently re-felted flat roof. We have been advised that the cause is the old coping stones on the roof, which serves as a balcony. A roofer came to start the job of removing the coping stones but they wouldn't budge. He said the tool he'll need to use to get them off could cause the bricks below to be damaged and he didn't want to do that as he's not a brickie. We can see that a lot of the bricks below the balcony desperately need repointing, particularly in the corner where the leak is worst. We're wondering whether to start by having the bricks repointed, seeing if that fixes the leak and if not, moving onto the coping stones. Issue is, we could get the repointing done and if it doesn't fix it, we'd potentially damage the newly repointed bricks when the coping stones are removed. We're also not sure what trade we need. Is this a general building job given the task of removing the coping stones or will most bricklayers do that part of it? We also need felt to be installed under the coping stones, so that requires a roofer. All-in-all, we're a bit stuck on best course of action. Any advice welcome!

I would start by repointing the brickwork and looking at the coping and see if they need doing as well. From you are saying I doubt water is getting under the stones if they are that hard to remove. More than likely water is getting in though the joints of the brick. A bricklayer like myself would be able to do all this

If it is a cavity wall the loose bricks won't pass the water through the wall to the ather side so in this situation you have a problem with the roof so the leak comes from the corner of the roof on the inside so either the led is not correctly placed under the copying stone or the felt is not correctly placed down so from a professional point a professional inspection from a professional will tell you what is the problem but if you employ e roofer and he can't take of the copying stone that's not a professional but the thing is you get what you pay

If there is no dpc/felt as on person put it is under the coping stone then it is likely.to leak never the less.To be sure you will need to remove the copings and run a dpc under them and also do the pointing.I would suggest that if possible run lead up off your flat roof and up the wall and under the coping stone to seal.
