Should my upstairs lights be on the same circuit as my downstairs sockets ?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

My daughter was in the living room, pluging in christmas lights. My son was upstairs turning on the bathroom light, which came on and went immdiatley off, at the same time all the sockets down stairs went off, I checked the main fuse board nothing had tripped, I removed all xmas lights and fliped the main fuse on the circuit board for both upstairs lights and downstairs sockets off and back on, i still had no power to either, so called the company who i use regularly, they came while i was at work and said they something in the kitchen had caused the lights and sockets to trip so tripped the switch off and on and everything worked again ! I now am considering if there is a problem with how the house is wired and if its safe since this has happened and nothing tripped the main fuse board ?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This requires an investigation by a Qualified Electrician. It could be a faulty appliance , but its worth checking, because nobody can say without getting familiar with your installation and runing a few tests

There may be an RCD protecting those two circuits which tripped. Do you know if you have an RCD? Split load boards have one, dual RCD boards have two. I doubt its anything more sinister than that. Edit: The lighting circuit will not be on the same circuit as the sockets. It was an RCD that tripped not the breakers.

I would say the Xmas lights caused the fault , unless a bulb blew in the bathroom and tripped the breaker . Your lights should not be on the same circuit as any sockets . Lights are generally protected by a 6 A device , sockets 20 A and even 32 A . I suggest an EICR by an electrician to establish what fuse protects what cables Earthing and bonding checks and RCD testing .

Skt outlet circuits and lighting circuits should not be on same circuit. Sometimes if a lamp expires it will cause a trip on the lighting circuit. Best advice hire a qualified electrician to investigate.
