IS THERE A NEAT WAY OF INSTALLING SWA CABLE ARMOURED CABLE 16MM in size

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Let me rephrase the question… My garden is 50 metres long and at the back I have made a garage as we have back entry. The electrician will be fitting a RCB consumer unit in there… Recommended a 16MM SWA cable for my needs. My main consumer unit is based by my front door. I was wondering if the SWA cable can be glanded into a wiska box. Now the wiska box will be fully weatherproof as it will be inside my alley way which has a roof over it. From the wiska box can the cable of the inner core be taken to the main fuse board, without taking the whole 16MM SWA to the fuse board as it looks horrible. The cable going in will be behind trunking next to the main fuse cables, so no additional trunking will be needed. Is this doable or does the SWA cable need to go inside the property and be glanded to the main consumer unit?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you will strip SWA in that case, you will get single insulated cables which have to be fully enlosed in the trunking all the way to the consumer unit. Which means you will need at least 50mm deep trunking to correctly connect trunking into consumer unit (20-25mm hole, bush, locknut). Also worth mentioning that you are not allowed to run single insulated cables in the wall, so glanding cable into wiska box and stripping the cable inside is out of the question.

As above, box in or have an electrician install the cable within trunking.

You could use 16mm twin and earth Inside the property to the outdoor wiska box

Nothing wrong in using T&E to Wiska. But it will need to be RCD protected. Also regs state a new circuit would require SPD as well .CU in garage would be main switch only (no RCD) as it’s protected from house RCD
