Garden slabs look patchy after sealant

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Hi I got my garden paved with sandstone slabs. The day after the repointing the guy put the sealant on. The following morning all the slabs looked patchy and after contacting him he said the sealant makes the slabs look different that’s why not everyone gets it but it should dry out a bit more leave it for a while let it all dry out. Its now been a week and it still looks patchy and awful! The slabs are a grey colour but now its got white patches everywhere. Is it supposed to look like that? If yes how can I maybe get rid of the sealant as the slabs looked much much nicer without it. And if they are not supposed to look like that then what did the guy do wrong and how can it be fixed so I can get the guy to come sort it out. Thanks! After reading 2 replies, I have been told that jet wash or any remover will not work due to the slabs being porous and nothing can be done. Is this the case?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I'm sorry to hear about this problem you have, this happens when moisture is trapped underneath the sealer, this happens to sealers that are not breathable or over applied, sun will raise the moisture out of the slabs but the water cannot escape as its been trapped under the sealer, it seems that the person you've had do this job has over applied the sealer. If your thinking of removing the sealer you can buy sealants remover online and the instructions are quite straight forwards. Hope this has helped. CWB

best way to get off would probably be jet washing off

The white is powder residue from when they were cut they needed to be washed before sealing and it’s always best to do it prior to laying them as they will stain from sand and cement otherwise

Any patches or marks which appear on the stone after laying will simply be due to the stone adjusting to its new environment and will typically be very simple to solve with a little patience.

It sounds like moisture trapped under the sealer. Time will not solve the issue. Unfortunately, it would need to be redone.
