Roofing

Do I pay my roofer? (Leaking, Failed to show, damage garage contents)

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

Myself and my wife in our early 20s just moved into our first home which means money is tight and our flat felt garage roof started leaking. We agreed to getting a new fibre glass roof installed for £2500 with facias. Quote was given on the 24th October and work to be started on the 28th Oct.(Timeframe given by roofer). He then phoned on the 28th to say his van broke and will come another day. I chased on the 2nd Nov and roofer agreed to be come on the 4th/5th at 9am and asked for a deposit of £1000 to buy materials and pay for van repair. (Which I paid immediately). He did not turn up and blamed his friends childcare and said he would come the next day (the 5th). He did not come. Then agreed to come on the 7th, but again did not show up saying he could not get a rental van. Agreed to come the morning of the 8th, did not arrive till 2pm. and only delivered materials. Then he came and stripped the roof on the 9th and laid down new OSB, again I chased on the day as he did not turn up till 1:20pm and left at 4pm. Then Failed to come on the 11th (stomach bug), again I chased as he did not show. Also mentioned he still did not have facia and couldn't get them till 14th/15th. Since the 9th rubbish has been on my driveway which he said he will clear and check the tarp is on (He did not come). On the 15th I messaged to say the tarp has moved and it was going to rain, he did not come to resolve and now all OSB is soaked and many items in my garage are covered in water, such as tumble dryer, spare laminate flooring etc. My problem is this has taken over 3 weeks, failed to show on multiple occasions and stripped the roof and left it for a week to get wet when he did not have all materials. After paying £1000 already do I pay anymore.

Sorry to hear you got a bad roofer defiantly don’t pay him no more money sounds like a cowboy I would cut my losses and get a different roofer even if you managed to get him back could you trust his work I never ask for any money up front for any job

no, you should never open a roof up unless you have the materials on site to cover it up and protect it, while the weather can hold you back this should always be taken into consideration be a job is started especially a roof, he should have public liability to cover him for incidents like this. good luck Alex

Sorry to hear that stuff like this should not be happening to people it. Ot specially has you was trying to be so helpful trying to get his materials that's absurd , if I was in your shoes I would not have given him the £1000 deposit first of all and his van broken down had nothing to do with you guy but maybe materials ,but the van is diffrent story , don't send no more money now .

No don't pay no money try and get him to finish job then when u are completely satisfied then pay him if he's a proper roofer he will have liability insurance which can be used to cover your damage if this fails report him to fair trading people like this gives us good roofers a bad name
