Hot water & central heating query

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

Hi, I have a closed/pressurised vented central heating system with a 300l tank (Greenstar 40CDi boiler - I think!). Having the hot water set in the morning eg. for an hour provides enough shower water for the family, and into the evening. However, if I have the central heating on at some point in the day there is no hot water afterwards. Three questions: 1. Why is this if it's a closed system? 2. What is the best period to have the hot water on - before, during or after central heating 3. How long would you expect to have the hot water on for with this size of tank - I currently have it set for 90 mins but could it be less ?? Thanks for any advice in advance! Gino Re reply / thanks. Understood I think. Is there any point in having hot water on before CH then if Ch gets prioritised? Should hot water go on after CH period?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Water takes the easiest way. If hot water tank circuit is long, water prefers to flow through the radiators. Your system is not balanced, so you have to heat hot water in different times to heating circuit and there's no point in overlapping those periods. New 300L cylinder reheats in 40 minutes so I would set it up for 1.5h periods twice a day to be safe.

1. Something is wrong with the controls setup, heating should not effect the hot water, also hot water should be set as priority. 2. You should diagnoze the fault , fix and enjoy the hot water any time you like, as it should not depend on heating. 3. Every tank should have manufacture specification of heat loss. it depends on up to what temperature is your tank is heated to, how well is insulated and how often you are useing hot water, as every time once you open your hot water tap , your cylinder is poping up with cold water which is mixed and making cylinder cooler.
