Plaster splash on wood burning stove cast top
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.48 PM
We had our living room skimmed and whilst we covered up the stove and inglenook a splash of watery skim landed on the top of our new cast Woodburner. I’ve used soapy water and a toothbrush but it hasn’t come out.. any other ideas of how to remove the drain? We didn’t notice it right away :(

A little spray of WD 40 works a treat.

Gypsum plaster can be a fine dust and it is likely that it is ingrained in the casting marks of the black iron surface.
I would recommend taking a lump of coal and a shoe brush and work some of the coal in to the ironwork to make it black again.

First and foremost don't attempt to use water or damp clothes etc to clean cast iron.
What you should do is use a shoe brush and just work the whole area buffing it, this will move around the iron coating used and should blend it back in to the normal colour of the fireplace.
If that fails then get to a good decorators shop and ask for some iron paste, this stuff is great for cast iron and you simply apply this with a shoe brush and buff it in.
