Making a planting hole in concrete
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.31 PM
We have a large concrete shed base (about 3m x 3m) that is currently being used as a patio, as it is in a good spot for the sun and we do not have a shed. I would like to plant a climbing rose at the edge where it meets the garage wall. Obviously I can use a container but as roses (climber especially) prefer roots in the ground, I was wondering if we can make a planting hole without the whole shed base cracking? I don't know what sub-base (if any) was used for the shed base as it was installed by previous owners.

Yes you can do it without cracking the concrete base ,you will need diamond core drill depends of what size the hole you need.
Hope we are on the same page.

Another way would be to cut a strip of concrete out along edge where planting is going to be
You would need a cut off saw with diamond blade in
You would have a lot more space for growth at base of plants

The simple way would be cuting w square box by using angle grinde with a concrete blade. No one says the hole needs to be round. Then with w hammer drill u should be able to breake the concrete … i realy dought it will be thicker then 4 inch, and would crack esily. Remove the cncrete and left overs to the pure soile and job done. Make sure u will use w big angle grinder with a blad which will be able to reach at least 3 inch down to avoid cracking👍🏻

The answer is fine , but you need to dig the hole about a foot deep at least , add topsoil and horse manure this will give the rose a long and happy life !!
