Hearth depth for wood burning stove

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hi My daughter is having a wood burning stove installed into the space where her fireplace used to be. She thought the new hearth she ordered extended too far into her room and had it cut from 18 to 16 inches depth. I have read that 12” is sufficient but I’m still a bit concerned about the safety of what she has done. The stove has a door of course so it’s not like an open fire. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The hearth depth on stoves is normally set in the manufacturers instructions, which will also give tolerance requirements around the stove body. I'd always recommend extending the hearth so that when the door is fully opened it protects the floor from any ash or embers which may fall.

As long as it extends a minimum of 225 mm in front of the appliance your ok.

Definitely make sure the hearth exceeds the open door , yiu could do a dry run first by placing the stove in the opening and opening the door , 20 mm is a great depth for a hearth I wouldn’t really go less than that to be on the safe side

The hearth depth should be a minimum 22.5cm in front of the stoves feet . As mentioned it's worth extending to beyond the door swing to catch any Ash from the door . The regs are dictated by part j of the building regulations
