Flitch plate above 1500mm French doors on garden room

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

Hi everyone! I’m building a garden office, it’s 7m x 3.7 I’ve got a 1500mm wide upvc French doors going in. Front wall will be 5x2 supporting 6x2 with 18mm osb and EPDM. I’ve been told to double up on 5x2 for above doorway. Someone else said the same but with flitch plate. What’s the answer here? Is it overkill?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would say no, it's not overkill. For the sake of what it costs i would add a steel flitch just a 4 or 6mm plate. Timber is a natural product and can always move I have actually sorted out a problem with a door today with failed timber construction above it. Same sort of thing as you describe but 2100mm wide door opening.

Yes I would agree that a flitch beam wouldn't hurt. especially for the sake of the relatively small cost involved.

it all depends on the weight above the doors ,is it single story with rafters if so ,flitch plate not required, use a 95 x 95 timber beam supported 150mm either side ,that all depends on door height obviously
