Damp Proofing

1900s mid terrace house - damp on internal walls + chimney breast

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.44 PM

In Jan we moved into a property which had been recently redecorated by a developer and all looked flawless. 9 months later and we have significant patches of damp emerging in our ground floor living space - mainly on the walls that we share with our neighbours on either side of the house. We were kind of ignoring the problem as it was just a bit of flaky paint initially, but after this week's rain we've noticed a really big patch near the old chimney breast and thinking we probably shouldn't leave this as is. Chimney is not in use and the top is capped - though can't tell what condition it's in. Any advice on how to approach this would be much appreciated! We would love to avoid doing any major work as budget is tight, but don't want to risk damage to our things / our health by doing nothing. I'm finding a lot of mixed messages online too which makes it hard to know what to do.

Check if the chimney has vents installed in the room. Sometimes less knowledgeable builders don’t put the vents in once blinding the chimneys. The other thing to check is if you have a chimney cap on top of your chimney. Thus will stop the rain coming down the chimney but would still recommend installation of the vents for air circulation. If it was refurbished recently the job should still be under warranty so contact the seller.

Install delta membranes PT membrane (or similar) over the damp areas (8mm meshed membrane) and then dot and dab plaster boards to the membrane. Plaster skim finish ready for decorating. Any damp will be contained in the wall and not damage the internal decorative linings. Vent chimney as others have mentioned.
