Extractor fan and fluorescent tube light
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.59 PM
Hi. Recently my light has taken up to 5 minutes to come on after the fan has started. They are on same pull cord. Anyone have any idea what's going on? **update, changed bulb and no difference, so I guess it's the light fitting? **
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Have you checked the bulb? I doubt its influenced by the fan its just coming on as it should.
Edit: Just seen it is a florescent fitting so could be the fitting.

I suspect that the ballast and starter within the fluorescent light has broken or is faulty hence why it’s taking so long to light up. Fluorescent lamps have a starter that ignited the gases within the lamp and if this is faulty then the gas won’t ignite correctly inside the fluorescent lamp. The fan will work immediately because your providing a voltage for the motor to start the fan. Hope this helps,

Some fluorescent fittings have a starter which can cause the lamp to take a long to come on or the lamp keeps flashing.
If the fitting does not have one then it is likely that the fitting needs to be replaced.

It sounds like the starter needs replacing the small plastic normally white cream coloured piece. You will need to twist it to get it out , it will be on the side somewhere , otherwise it’s a new replacement fitting. All LED now and they start instantly. Far superior than the old type.
