Use of gas fire with asbestos flue in the loft?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.59 PM
British Gas have disconnected the gas fire in my mums sitting room purely because there is a 1960's asbestos flue in the loft. As far as I am aware the flue is in good condition - are they being overly cautious? The fire itself was replaced in the 1980's I beleive so is not particularly ancient.

There is more to this then the previous poster has suggested. All registered Gas Safe engineers who are qualified to work on gas fire appliances be it B.G or anyone else have to carry out 5 basic tests to begin with as follows:
1. Visual safety inspection of the appliance and its flue way/chimney
2. Visual safety inspection of catchment space
3. Visual safety inspection of flue terminal
4. Flue flow test
5. Spillage test
In order to satisfy themselves that Item 1 is in order they will of course need to examine the entire flue way/chimney where practically possible so in this case they have entered the loft which is absolutely necessary in order to do so, if how ever they see any material that is harmful to there health in this case Asbestos then COSHH comes in to play - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. For them to properly examine if the asbestos flue is safe and intact they may have to get closer to it which poses health & safety implications so I believe they have acted in a responsible manner purely in the interests of the engineers own safety but you can ask B.G to re-attend and advise them that part of the gas fire flue way is indeed asbestos then they can make an informed decision on whether to return which will involve wearing the correct personal protective equipment and other safety measures this then becomes very expensive!.

As long as the asbestos isn’t disturbed and it’s passed a smoke bomb test they are being overly cautious
