Neighbour’s wood burner

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.59 PM

Recently I was getting smoke down my chimney from neighbour’s wood burner. Our chimneys adjoin. I don’t have any form of heating in my fireplace at all. My neighbour fitted a rotating cowl to his chimney and that solved my problem. However I can smell smoke in my hallway beneath my loft hatch. I’ve been up in the loft and although I can’t see smoke I can smell it. My neighbour said he would light his burner and check his loft for signs of smoke, there were none, and we looked at mine with a torch only and couldn’t see any obvious signs. However this evening the smell is there and obvious in the loft although I couldn’t see smoke. I checked with torch only and then with the light on. I live in a bungalow. Can anyone offer any advice or a solution to this problem?

Smoke is really the least of your problems if the chimney is leaking it needs fixed before he uses the fire again a liner would be the easiest solution. Carbone monoxide kills. Good luck Alex

Does the neighbour has his chimney lined ? You need to find out if he has then he should pay for a cap on your chimney . If the chimney is not lined then he must stop using his fire/ stove until it gets a liner installed by a professional person

As said they should have used a liner. Because it’s a short run might be getting back drafting. But would get a co alarm. Ask to see his record s to see if signed off. Or a flue was installed. The other issue could be chimney to short. If not joy call HETAS or the council. If you use an orange smoke pellets you be able to see the smoke. Mark innes.
