Parquet floor over (potentially) asbestos tiles

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi there. Just moved into a house (1969 chalet dormer) and having pulled up the carpet have found hard tiles glued to the suspended wood floors. We’ve not paid fo a test but given the age (and the matching artex) and the look I suspect asbestos. We’re happy to leave them down and cover regardless but unsure if engineered wood (parquet) or new carpet and underlay is possible and which is easier. We’d love wood floors but do want to focus on practicality. I googled but can’t get a straight answer. Any help really, really appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Meredith, The main concern is not to disturb the existing floor if it is suspected to have asbestos. I would recommend an adequate protection layer on top of the existing floor and an underlay before laying your wooden floor - Install and preparation and per manufacturer specifications. I don't see an issue with using a wooden floor. Same process with the carpet. It would depend on your finishes preference Many Thanks

Hello Meredith, As you are not sure if the floor contains asbestos, you should assume that it is as they used to use ASI as a form of insolation for walls, ceilings and walls back in the day. I’d strongly advise to not disturb it, and if you want to remove it to replace for a modern flooring, I’d strongly suggest you sending a sample to be tested before hand, or call a qualified personal/company to do so. All the best

Don’t Disturb it, you can put an engineer wooden floor over the top with a decent underlay If you do want to take it up have it removed professionally which will cost quite a lot

Will be good to cover straight away but by law you need to check with special company and if is asbestos they have to remove that firs and after fit what you want on the floor. Asbestos is dangerous and it's risk to leave it there
