Insulation

Can acoustic insulation eliminate noise from the neighbours stomping on the stairs?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.49 PM

I live in an end of terrace house and share a party wall with one neighbouring property. The stairs in both my property and theirs are built along the party wall. Sadly the people nextdoor, both adults and kids, seem to think the stairs are for stomping on as hard as physically possible and the noise is horrendously loud - it echoes through the hallway as well making it seem even louder. I have zero peace in my own home and it's really starting to take its toll. Is there any sort of insulation that could eliminate this noise? What sort of work would be involved? Any advice on what could be done would be massively appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, if you search for ‘sound insulation’ you can find all different companies make specific products for your exact problem, it probably wouldn’t completely eliminate the thundering of noisy footsteps stampeding up and down your neighbours staircase for no apparent reason but it can only help, you would probably have to build a stud wall and insulate that with your chosen sound insulation then plasterboards over the top of them, hope this helps

Last year I worked on a client’s home to reduce the noise from the neighbours and researched many different solutions. In the end I used products from The Soundproofing Store which were excellent in my opinion (and they’ve won different awards in this area). The ‘soundboards’ are only 30mm thick, to then be plastered over and painted. They’re made of an extremely dense material which reduces noise levels from next door. For sound absorption from vibration/impact noises and bass, they offer the reducto clip system. You can read up on all their products on The Soundproofing Store website, which is easy to navigate and explains things in great detail, for customer and tradesperson alike. Hope this helps! I agree with Alex Williams. Stud wall and insulate is one option, another, more messy and probably more expensive would be to open up the party wall from your side, and insulate it more fully. That’s assuming there is a cavity to insulate… but in any event I doubt it Would fully deafen the noise but it might reduce it.

Agree with Alex, this type of works are usually challenging and usually there is some improvement but can be hard to eliminate noise completely.
