Trimming a glazed internal door

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.31 PM

My door size is 1940 x 755 and I would like to fit glazed internal doors. Problem is that all the ones I have looked at to purchase won’t fit. The nearest size is 1981 x 762 with a max trim of 32mm total from top and bottom. I would need doors trimming by 40mm total top and bottom. Is there anywhere I can buy doors that would allow this degree of trimming? I don’t want to waste money attempting to alter a door and finding it won’t trim to the size needed or looks wrong because of over trimming.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Just a quick suggestion; from experience most doors you buy off the shelf can be trimmed a fair bit more than the manufacturers recommended amount especially if it’s mortise and tenon frame. I would recommend getting the smallest door you can that’s solidly built, as I mentioned mortise and tenon build. Would be best if you could see it before purchasing and check that even with the amount of trimming you need to do you wouldn’t eat into and thus compromise the tenon joint.. hope that helps

Hello, the width is fine, there will be enough planning edge to accommodate the 7 - 10 mm difference. Make sure you take around 5-6mm from the hinge side, leaving the smaller adjustment on the leading edge (lock/latch side). The height of 40 mm can be taken from the bottom of the door, most doors have a bigger style at the bottom to accommodate this, If it’s an internal flush door, the door will be hollow, it will be supported at the bottom by a 2x1 internal batten, this can be removed, door cut down and then re glued and inserted back in, standard practice for flush doors, However given as this sounds like a 2xg internal glazed door, then the bottom style will be solid giving you enough rail to trim down, Hope this was helpful Cliff

If you are purchasing glazed doors then most of the ones available will be of solid core construction. Therefore taking more off the bottom wouldn’t alter the strength of the door.

it's a little risky. it all depends on how thick the lipping is at the edge of the door. If it is not a fire door, the lipping is quite thin, and if it is cut off, the door will be damaged if the door is laminated. If the door is to be painted, then in principle you can achieve needed result, but I would not advise taking a risks. I recommend to get the door with new frame/lining and replace that all. You can use ur old architraves and save some money. New lining cost not much, so better spend a bit more on lining than take a risc and waste the money for the door. Thank you for reading.
