Can rainwater from guttering discharge into combined sewer system

Anonymous user 13 March 2024 - 2.31 PM

I have a house built in the 1920s. Guttering at one side of roof discharges into a downpipe at side of house that then itself discharges into a soil filled whole, which we think is a soakaway. This is blocked up and so water just runs off over path but more worrying pools in the hole at the corner of the house. Since the house, due to its age, has a combined sewer system (ie at other side of house the guttering goes into a bottle gulley which discharges into the same drain as the bathroom waste) is it okay/legal to connect the downpipe to the sewer system (again via a bottle gully)? There is a convenient manhole cover a couple of feet away.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes - a combined sewer is for drainage of effluent and rainwater, but if ever in doubt simply confirm through your LA (building control officer) - hope this helps.

If the rest of the house is linked in the combined system then it is perfectly acceptable to do the same. Its hard to say whithout seeing the problem but puting a hose or pressure washer down the hole. It might just be blocked? It always helps to do a bit of investigation with a spade, as it gives you peace of mind. Your getting a quote for whats actually needing done! Regards Garry Howe
