Conservatory, extension or garden office building?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Since we are now working from home majority of the time and my box room cannot really serve well as a guest room (regularly have family stay from afar) and as an office, so I'm looking at options where I can add space for dedicated office space and would really like some advice as to what my options are. My garden is approx. 4m just over the width of my small townhouse house, and length roughly 10m so wouldn't be looking for anything big. I guess the 2 main options that spring to my mind would be a conservatory or a garden office at the bottom of the garden, possibly with a divider for a section to be used as a shed. Whatever option I went with would need to be useable all year round, so needs to be comfortable in terms of climate. I think my main question is what would generally work out best option? Any advice, tips, other thoughts, suggestions would be much appreciated, from a solo lady who has no knowledge in this field! Thank you.

Suggest that you build an office to take advantage of the available space, and that doesn't mean dispensing with the garden. You can create a garden that matches the space offered.

Although conservatories are a nice space they do have negatives can be cold in winter but extremely hot in summer. A garden building if properly insulated are generally a good idea. A building such as this would require heating in the winter months. Some thought needs to go in to this given the current climate on energy bills. It may be also that planning permission may be required. Regards Craig

Conservatories are often hot in the summer and cold in the winter so all year round use might not be ideal. I suggest an off the shelf timber building at the bottom of your garden with a separate section of the building to be used as storage. This would require a builder to install a concrete base, then build the timber building (basically a flat pack) and run an electric supply from your house. Not very labour intensive and the flat pack buildings are relatively cheap compared to a Conservatory, plus with good insulation and heating the building could be used all year round.

Hi Better to build a small extension onto the back of the dwelling instead of a conservatory less heat loss etc more value to property and more of a permanent build 👍
