2 way switch wiring came look on switch

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

I have light switch wire that’s come loose while plastering. It’s a 2 way landing light. Downstairs there’s a 2 gang switch, one switches downstairs enttance light on, one switches upstairs landing. The upstairs landing has again a 2 way switch, but one gang only - previously switching the upstairs landing light only. There’s a red wire (not live) that seems to have come loose from upstairs light switch. Upstairs light switch has: Red (com) Red and yellow into l1 Blue only into l2 And the red wire that’s loose (not live even with all lights etc on) Light pendant has: two black into neutral Three red loops One single red into live (I’m assuming this is possibly the other end of the red loose wire?) Downstairs 2 gang light switch has: Two coms (both red) One switch has a red cable with blue tape on The other switch has Yellow into L1 Blue into L2 Based on above would I be correct I think the the upstairs light switch should have the loose red cable either going into com (I’m Assuming this wire is going to light pendant) Or should the red wire go into same connection as blue wire in upstairs light switch. Will upload pictures shortly if needed UPDATE Thanks for the responses. So I put the loose red wire into L2 with Blue - everything was fine but then I after switching the light off - there remained a very very dim glow on the LED bulb. I turned off the upstairs light circuit at consumer unit - and the dim glow did turn off. When I switched the consumer unit back on, the dim glow came back, even before I turned on the light switch. I did only have 1 led bulb fitted in the fixture (there's 3 in total) but I assume somethings not correct. I did change the light fitting from a regular pendant to LED spotlights - and I wired it back in exactly how it was previously at the pendant. So a bit unsure at mo.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Put the loose red wire in L2 with the blue. That should sort it. Edit: The dim glow in an LED is nothing to worry about. It goes away after a short time. Its just a quirk with some LEDs I'm afraid. Glad its all sorted.

Wow. Your upstairs landing light is a one gang two way switch. It depends really which switch is the feed at. The cabling to your landing switch should be a twin cable and should also be a single cable coming into landing switch. The twin cable either twin red or twin brown should connect into L1 and L2. Don't matter which goes where. The single cable should connect into com on the switch. Check if the cable loose is live and if it is, it goes into com connection other wise it could be the sw wire.

It’s not a simple answer, if the LED lamp did not do this prior I would doubt it to be the lamp or driver. This usually happens when using cheap Lamps these can also make a humming noise. It could be the wiring when the neutral is not bonded correctly or the switch is leaking a small amount of current even switched off. My advice is to get a qualified electrician to take a look as faulty wiring is potentially dangerous.
