Windows & Door fitting

Builder has fit bifold doors but left a trench along inside wall

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Our builder has removed old patio doors and a window frame and replaced it with bifold doors. There is now a big trench about 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep that runs the full length of the bifolds where existing doors/wall/window was removed. He says that filling this trench isn’t down to him and that I’ll need to get a flooring contractor? He has also left a huge hole in the floor where he removed a wall separating the kitchen/diner. Is this normal practise? Builder has agreed to fill the void tomorrow but has said no DPC needed. I can see where the DPC ends under the existing concrete floor. Does this not need to join up with the new DPC under the bifolds? Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It's good practice for a builder to "make good" in cases like this, which would include filling that trench. It could also be a safety hazard, so personally, I would've got that sorted and I'm sure the majority of builders would have too.

Totally agree with above previous work I fitted a lot of bifolding doors. And to leave you with a open cavity I wouldn’t be happy also. Previous builder may hav had the idea on making more money to sell you a internal cill and to re board the walls. Surely he should have made good and walked away from a good job .

When removing windows and doors, then replacing them the majority of trades people would factor in the 'Making good' for the customers into the costs and explaining the costs to the customer, they should discuss aspects of the build with you at an early stage or when they quote for jobs. Thus leaving you satisfied with the completed job, not letting the feeling a sense of astonishment to find holes and trenches, that have so called 'nothing to do with them', I personally find this unsatisfactory from professionals- leaving the job in a state for the customer! Yes you would need the DPC membrane to line up to the edge of the bi-folds before filling in the gap
