Oil fired boiler and immersion heater

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.44 PM

Just moved into a house last month (our first home) and there is an oil fired boiler outside, and the water tank has an immersion heater fitted in too. I had assumed the immersion heater was a backup for if the oil ran out, however if I turn this off then we run out of hot water. With electricity prices as they are, I really don’t want to rely on this expensive method of heating, but I also obviously can’t be without hot water. Is this a normal set up for the system? Is there any way I can just rely on heating oil and not on the immersion heater? Edit: thank you all for the answers below! Aureus Energy Group’s answer helped, I got a plumber out and they said that the cylinder stat was faulty and have replaced now. Thanks to everyone!

You should have a y or s plan system there will be a zone or 3 port valve or your cylinder stat could be faulty it's defo cheaper to use oil for hot water.

With the y or s plan heating system you should be able to just heat water with the boiler. Also put s time clock on to the immersion heater wiring system and set it for half hour on a morning and half hour on night that way you don’t forget about it being on all time

Does your cylinder have pipes into it from the boiler these will be entering the tank in line to each other and about 300mm apart Call-out a plumber he will soon tell you or post a picture of the hot water tank
