Builder requesting immediate payment but we haven’t received insurance pay out

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hello. One of our barns had storm damage earlier this year. The insurance company accepted one quote from a local contractor. He finished the job 2 weeks ago and is nagging to be paid but we have not received money from the insurers yet. What do we do?

if the insurance company were the ones instructing the contractor, then they are responsible for paying him, depends on who instructed the contractor to go ahead you or the insurance, generally if the insurance take over responsibility, they won't pay out till they have inspected the finished job dealing directly with the contractor paying him direct which can take months for to be paid and is not your responsibility, if you have instructed him to do the job even if it's on the say so of the insurance it is then your responsibility to check the finished job and pay him, in reality all this should have been discussed and all the detailed ironed out before the job started not once its finished, I feel there has been a lack of communication on all sides, generally, on any insurance work I do it is made clear to the clients before I start, they will be paying me, and they will be waiting for any insurance pay out if they don't want to go ahead on these terms, I won't be doing the job. I have worked direct for varies insurance company's before and the only one that was any good was the armed forces insurance who were punctual on payment others were a minimum of 3 months after completion before payment was received, would think your contractor will be angry if he has paid out lots of cash for materials and is now not getting paid for month you need to talk to them the quicker the better

Pay the contractor! You can wait for the insurance money to come in. He wouldn’t be asking for the money from you if he was dealing with the insurance company.
