Plumber refusing to invoice

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM

We had some plumbing work done. Firstly, new bathroom pipework for which we happily paid the price without invoice as it sounded reasonable. Now since then he has done a few other jobs that were on a much smaller scale - labour and material wise. We have not agreed any price beforehand (neither verbally nor written). Now he is asking £2500 for the misc jobs done which is way more than the initial big bathroom job. It has taken us by surprise and we are not fully convinced it is a reasonable amount. He is refusing to provide an invoice and says he only provides breakdown of costs if asked in advance of the job and charges extra for the invoice. Now I am more than happy to pay if this is fair price but how am I supposed to know if no breakdown is provided and instinctively the asking amount sounds unreasonable? Is this good practice on behalf of the plumber? Thanks for any opinions

No this isn't normal practice for any job. Every job should be priced and agreed beforehand. Any extra works should be priced accordingly and agreed by customer and operatives before works start. Kind regards John

Sometimes, both parties don't discus and agree the jobs but this happens when there is repeat customer and the customer (you in this case) knows what is a rough price for the day rate. An invoice should be provided if and when asked, in fact the trade should offer this anyway, along with how the payment is done (part of t's&c's). Charging for an invoice is news to me, as I only charge for an insurance job quote. Even that can't be more than £50 (which is deducted from the final invoice, should the job goes ahead). I hope you get this sorted with your plumber.

Simple....NO INVOICE NO PAYMENT. You are 100% right to ask for an invoice if you require o e or even if you would just like I e to see the break down. If this plumber has nothing to hide he/she should be sending it straight over to show you what the chargers are for. As a future word of advice always get your quote/price in writing/email before any works starts then you have something solid to start with. The only time I don't provide this service is when it's an emergency and I'm running on a hourly rate to just isolate the issue. Then once the issue is isolated I provide a full break down and either collect payment for the emergency works or continue with the agreement made with the customer.
