Laying a patio, can I grout to the house wall?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.58 PM
Hi, laying a patio in the back garden. Is there a general rule for laying and grouting right up to the outside wall of the house? (the patio will be over 15cm below the damp course and there are two semi-circular drains literally right against the rear wall). It would definitely look nicer grouted to the wall, but just checking if there are any rules for leaving a gap or special measures? Thanks, Bruce

As long as you're ~150mm (or more) below the damp proof course it shouldn't be an issue. I typically leave a small gap depending on the size of slabs used (50-150mm) between the wall of the house and fill with gravel apart from at entrances where I will lay right up to the wall. I personally think it looks a bit tidier and allows for good drainage, also make sure you're laying on a slight gradient to allow drainage in the direction needed!
Cheers, John

As long as your 2 courses of brick below damp course your absolutely fine to do that , we usually leave 100mm gap between patio and the house and fill with gravel but you’ll be okay to grout it if you want to.

Make sure that your slabs are falling away from the house otherwise water could lay there with the potential to cause problems latr on

You are okay, is not a rule . The good thing is you’re under dump proof course.
