Cavity wall insulation always a good thing?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Hi, we had cavity wall insulation put in our double bricked 1940s house 17yrs ago. The past year a damp patch is growing above the skirting board in the living room . We had the company back out and after inspecting it they said it wasn’t the insulation , they found a few voids? in the wall and injected more in. Said to see how it was in a few months, it’s not got better and the patch gets darker when we’ve had wet weather. Any advice would be great before I contact them again 😊

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This sounds like a condition called hygroscopic dampness. It looks like an area of wall that becomes darker in wet weather that seems to lighten when it’s drier outside. This condition is caused by too thick plaster , any plaster thicker than 2.0mm is at risk , one never knows when this condition will start but once it’s started , the plaster will need replacement. To confirm, check the plaster thickness ( not render thickness)

This sounds like materials used the finishing stage. I would recommend a damp investigation to test the thickness of the plaster or if bonding was used. This is absorbing the moisture in wet weather.

The idear of cavity wall on older property’s was not so ,they could be filled with insulation this does not work cavity wall insulation is ideal for new properties as the outer wall is brick and the internal wall is plaster board if it’s a double brick install air bricks approx every 3 metres check the damp course injection if required Recommendation of a Damp Specialist they are hard to come by try MyBuilder I specialise in Damp all my customers old back money to make sure the Damp settles as I go back to check it’s called customer care
