How to treat area of rotted wood on sash window

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 4.05 PM

Hi everyone, We live in a basement Victorian flat that has the original sash windows and they haven't been very well looked after, nothing too bad but just not been painted recently etc. One of the windows is in a worse state and a couple of inches of wood is really soft and easily comes out when poked. I'm hoping I can put some sort of wood filler in and then paint over the area but wanted to check what the advice would be for dealing with this area please?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Personally speaking wood filler will not stop the rot I would cut out the infected wood and replace it with new wood or better still replace the whole section of the sash prime and paint job done.

Replace the sash as filler will not stop the dampness adding paint will make it worst as its liquid. check window area for potential mould issue. replace and paint.

Unfortunately wood filler won't solve your problems, you may find a new sash could be cheaper than trying to remove the rot and let in a new section, seal and paint due to the hours this would take and the more you remove the more the problem will go ...not really a cheap fix to be honest ,raise with your landlord if he has any sense it would be in his interest as the property owner.
