Heat retention gain from upgrading to upvc windows

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

Hi , I've recently moved into a property( detached)that was built in 2004. The build quality is great but it has timber framed double glazing I can only assume has been in since then. There are some rooms in the house that are colder than the rest (Not all on external walls) My question is , is there a significant difference in heat retention/ sound dampening in more modern windows ? Can I expect a significant difference ? Thanks in advance Thought I would ask trade's people as the salesman I've spoken to have promised upwards of 40% efficiency

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you already have double glazed timber windows as you have stated, then your seals might have gone. Hard to say without pictures. I'd suggest to get a good carpenter around to have a look at the windows and maybe install new seals for draft proofing. Would work out loads cheaper than buying new windows. "Upgrading" to new upvc from double glazed timber windows in it self should not help, as the timber framed windows are arguably better for sound, and as good for heat retention.

Modern glazing is much more energy efficient than the early days of “K” glass due to argon gas filled units. K glass was introduced in 2000 as part of the Kyoto agreement to reduce greenhouse gases. The problem with early timber windows is the small cavity between the two panes of glass which reduces the effectiveness of both heat loss and sound. Laminate or triple glazing is fantastic for reducing both of these and should be considered. For u value calculations you always go on the GGF website.

Hi there it will make a massive difference upgrading to upvc as if they have been in since 2004 even if they are double glazed the glass has come on leaps and bounds since then if you get argon filled warm edge spacer k glass this will help retain more heat for sure and if you want to improve on sound reduction go for acoustic glass which costs abit more but will reduce noise hope this helps thanks
