Is it possible to reduce a solid wood door (no veneer) more than advertised
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM
To avoid buying bespoke doors I need to reduce the height of a solid oak door with no veneer by 40mm or more. The tolerance advertised is 1.5cms on all sides. I understand this will affect the structure. Is it possible to do this and perhaps strengthen the top and bottom of the door in some way?

As long as it's not off the sides, you will be fine taking that amount off top and bottom.

Hi It really all depends on the structure of the door. If it is jointed correctly with through foxtail wedged haunches tenanns then it will be ok the reduce width by 15 mm each side, nothing else would be required. If you ate,pt to reduce the height you will destroy the haunches on the tennons.

As you said this will have an impact on the doors structure, but not enough to cause any concern.
To give yourself some peace of mind add a hardwood lipping where the cut is made. All the best.

It all depends on the type of door and the way it is constructed.I don’t think your doors will be solid oak if there saying you can only take off 15mm from each side as a true solid oak door would allow more to be taken off .it sounds like the doors are veneered and have a oak edging on them.
