Connecting to old steel mains pipe

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM

I have a leaking stopcock which probably needs replacing. At first I thought it was connected to mains lead but it appears to be 25mm ish steel in fact. The steel pipe comes up vertically from underground then connects to a 90 degree elbow which is threaded directly onto the stopcock. The stopcock nut is more like rad tails which fits directly onto the female elbow, rather than a compression fitting which makes its tricky to replace. Can I just cut the steel pipe and use a special fitting? If so, what types of fittings are there for steel?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Evening Rory, I replied to one of your previous when you thought it was lead. My response still applies as it is a universal coupling. It will transition between any material.. Depending how much space you have, i'd be tempted to go for a plasson universal coupling then a use an internal reducer straight to 15mm, and your next stop valve. To size the plasson universal coupling, its the external diameter of the pipe you're going on to. Links are long but here: Plasson Internal reducer: https://www.monsterplumb.co.uk/plasson-25mm-x-15mm-conversion-set-adaptor-for-copper-pipe-mdpe-mechanical?gclid=Cj0KCQjwguGYBhDRARIsAHgRm49rHYuYZrxnFaXzYw2t-WNo8Bd1KmiFYfLz_qqwaCAF1AfIEPvqJo0aAjKQEALw_wcB Plasson Universal Coupling: https://www.monsterplumb.co.uk/plasson-plass4-20mm-to-27mm-x-25mm-universal-coupling-mdpe-mechanical It you're tight for space, the next option is to get a 'primofit' in galv, then transition to copper to your stop valve. 2 options on this: Get a compression primofit, then use a nipple and a Female Iron to get to copper. Or Get a Compression to Femalr Iron primofit and transition via an MI. I deal with a lot of old galv and if we cant thread it, this is what's used. I would not advise cutting the pipework. Fit a male threaded reducer to the female bend .

Turn the water off in the street or freeze below the elbow. Unmake the valve from the elbow. Stick in a 3/4 brass or Galv nipple and a new BSP valve then work away from there. Easiest and cheapest way. Dont need to be messing around with primofit or reducers.
