Is it cheaper to leave hot water on all day?

We have just moved to a house that’s off grid and therefore runs on electric. We have a direct unvented/immersion hot water system with a thermostat. If the hot water tank has a thermostat, is it cheaper to leave it on all day so that it just kicks in and out when you use hot water or is it better to put it on a timer for twice a day which heats a tank of cooler water? Thanks!

No. I wouldn't. If your interested in saving electric I would put it on intermittently to coincide with times that you'll use hot water. It will lose heat gradually when it is storing hot water. Therefore best to heat it just before it will be used for showers etc. There should be tepid warmish water to use for general hot water needs in between which will lose heat alot more slowly. I would recommend you get a smart wifi control for it if your comfortable with that kind of thing?
