Is this wet rot or dry rot on window sill?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.48 PM
Hi - I noticed on the top of the window ledge what looks to be rot damage. I then ripped up the wooden window ledge to reveal a load of rotten wood. The gap was filled with a lot of expanding foam and there are black hair like strands on the external lintel / window cill. My theory is water has penetrated the door. This is on the 2nd floor. How concerned should I be that there’s rot? Are the hairs dry rot or wet rot? How should it be filled in? Are the windows themselves poorly fit and could they have caused the original damage?

Hi Josh,
Wet Rot tends to be quite common - it is essentially most forms of fungal type rot which is caused a combination of excessive moisture and favourable temperature conditions for the rot to develop.
Dry Rot is a specific type of fungus which can be a significant issue, as it can spread to cause damage in other areas. However, this isn't too common.
Are you able to share some images of the rot?

It will be wet rot as windows are in contact with a lot of water once the repair work is done make sure all gaps and spaces are sealed with a good silicone sealant
