Distance of washing machin from electric board

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

I have recently stripped out a kitchen and had my fuseboard moved into a different room but the electric meter and panel is still near the floor in the kitchen. It's only a small kitchen so I need to make best use of the space. My plan is to box the electric board in and have my washing machine in that corner, therefore whenever access is needed the washing machine can just be pulled out and no space is lost for access. Are there any restrictions on the distance between a washing machine and elecric board?

There are no restrictions in the regs relating the proximity of a washing machine to a mains intake however electrical equipment at the mains intake should have good ventiliation and be easily accessible. When the washing machine is in its spin cycle there could be the risk of vibrations being transmitted to the meter and cut-out that could lead to loose connections in time.

I really wouldn't advise this, it's very close proximity of water to mains electric intake. If your washing machine hose came loose on the back then it would create a very dangerous situation. There is no RCD protection at the mains intake, a shock here could be fatal, especially where water is involved, and the fact that it's near the floor only adds more risk.

No such restrictions about distances of electricity meters from washing machines exist in the wiring regulations. Just make sure the meter can be easily read!

Good answer, however a bit extreme.
