Air brick moving / ducting and bi-fold door

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

Hi, I'm having an extension built and I wondered if the position of air bricks can be changed on the new extension wall, such that they don't line up (horizontally) with the original vents as I'd like to install low threshold bi-fold doors, so there wouldn't be room under the doors for the air vents. Can the ducting for the air vents be run diagonally through the concrete slab, so they route either side of the bi-fold doors? If this isn't the case how can it be done? Also does the duct pipe have to run below the 150 mm of gravel or can it run through it and does the concrete slab need to be reinforced above the air ducting to the vent? Thanks

The most important thing is to maintain the same amount of airflow as the existing as this would have originally been calculate as per square foot of floor space. The duct should be at a minimum of 110mm diameter, preferably 160mm ( reducers are available if connecting to telescopic venting system), it should be run through the hardcore, with insulation on top covered by at least 100mm of concrete with reinforcement mesh ( this will be specified on drawings) 50 mm from top. Presuming your original floor has a crawl space with cement screed or dpm at least 200mm below the bottom of your joists, this will be be plenty of space to take the pipe horizontally through the existing wall. Best practice would be to put insect mesh on the outer and vermin mesh on the inner and provide access hatches on your existing floor. Hope this was helpful.
