Poorly done repointing

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.30 PM

I recently had a company come and take away 3 courses of bricks and repoint the remaining chimney. They have only done parts of the front, left the sides and majority of the back untouched and not repointed at all. The front that they have done, looks absolutely appalling and doesn't look safe or to a satisfactory quality. When booking for a chimney to be repointed, would I expect for the full chimney to be done , not just parts? Also how long should the repointing of a chimney take as they weren't here very long, no safety equipment was used either, they were freely walking all over the tiles in my roof, without safety harness, roofing ladder or scaffolding. And if possible I'd like to be able to show a picture of said work carried out. Thanks Hi, I saw you sent a reply to my question about my poorly down repointing of the chimney on my house. I can't figure out how to send you a reply on there. So sorry if this isn't the correct way. I discussed with the company who did the work, that the chimney needs repointing fully so it's safe for the weather to come, then when he was here, he's taken it upon himself to only do parts. When you can clearly see the old mortar has gaps and is crumbling, so all does need doing... he's then said he will render the full thing but surely that isn't going to make it safer? Only hide the cracks isn't it? I'm not sure whether to allow him to do anymore work as the first bit of work he did was appalling. Thankyou

Good afternoon I wouldn't expect that at all, as suggested if the price was to repoint the chimney I would expect just that. Swapping some bricks for a unsavory match and doing half a job is not sufficient and they should have gone over the price and quick repair it sounds as if they've under quoted and should have explained the job in better detail with yourselves.

What’s the question? The amount of pointing should be discussed before the job commences.

The job and price should have been discussed before the job commenced, communication between the customer and the trades men taking on the job is key so there is no confusion also job should be safe to work on so if scaffold is needed then should be notified to the customer
